Skincare, Skin Treatments or a Dermatologist: What Does Your Skin Actually Need?
Written by Kayley Fitz, Pharmacist at eDerma
When you want to improve your skin, knowing what to do next isn’t always straightforward.
Do you need to change your skincare routine? Would a professional treatment such as microneedling or laser help? Or is what you’re experiencing something that should be assessed by a dermatologist?
With more skincare products, treatments and technologies available than ever before, it can be tempting to start with the solution: buy the serum, book the laser, try the treatment.
At eDerma, we believe it should work the other way around.
Start with your skin. Then determine the right plan.
That philosophy sits at the heart of eDerma, eDerma MediSpa and Dr Nivana’s dermatology practice: personalised skin care and treatment, backed by medical experience and knowledge.
Your skin isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your care shouldn’t be either.
Two people may appear to have a similar concern but need very different approaches.
The appropriate next step may be professionally selected skincare. It may be an advanced treatment or combination of treatments. And sometimes, what appears to be a cosmetic concern requires medical assessment and diagnosis instead.
This is why the wider eDerma offering has been developed around three connected pathways of care.
eDerma: personalised skincare guidance, digitally
eDerma is not simply an online skincare store.
It is the digital gateway to professional skincare guidance, giving you a place to begin when you’re unsure what your skin needs.
Through eDerma’s free online skin assessment, your individual skin concerns, needs and goals can be considered before you simply start adding products to your routine.
The aim is to help remove some of the guesswork from skincare and guide you towards products that are appropriate for your skin from a professionally curated range.
And importantly, if your concern appears to need more than skincare, there is a pathway beyond the product shelf.
Start with your skin. Not the shelf.
eDerma MediSpa: not a treatment menu, but a treatment plan
There is also a point where skincare alone may not be able to achieve what you’re looking for.
That’s where eDerma MediSpa comes in.
The MediSpa is not positioned as a conventional beauty salon or relaxation-focused spa. It is a functional, results-focused treatment environment, where the emphasis is on understanding the skin and selecting appropriate treatments for the individual’s concerns and goals.
Rather than simply asking:
“Which treatment would you like?”
The more important question is:
“What does your skin actually need?”
The MediSpa offering sits within the wider medical practice environment and is overseen by Dr Nivana, who has worked with and trained the therapists within the practice over many years.
Experienced therapists assess and treat within their scope, while a qualified nursing sister performs the more invasive procedures. Where specialist medical input is required, the concern can be escalated to Dr Nivana.
The result is a more connected approach: professional skincare, advanced treatments and medical dermatology each have a role, but that role is determined by the individual’s skin.
What treatments are available at eDerma MediSpa?
Treatments aren’t selected simply because they’re popular or trending. Different technologies and procedures have different roles within an individual treatment plan.
Laser treatments
Laser is one of the MediSpa’s key advanced treatment offerings and can be used for a range of different concerns, including hyperpigmentation, skin rejuvenation, scarring, tattoos, rosacea and other vascular concerns.
Microneedling
Microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin, helping to stimulate collagen rebuilding and skin regeneration. It can also be combined with exosomes, supporting skin regeneration and allowing treatment ingredients to penetrate more effectively.
PRP
PRP, sometimes referred to as the “vampire facial”, uses something your own body already produces. Because PRP is an invasive procedure working at a deeper level, it is performed by the qualified nursing sister within the practice.
Skin boosters
Skin boosters contain hyaluronic acid, but their purpose is different from traditional dermal fillers. These are also performed by the nursing sister because of the depth and invasive nature of the treatment.
Therapist-led treatments
The experienced therapists within the MediSpa can also provide treatments including chemical peels, dermaplaning, microneedling and microneedling combined with exosomes, as well as laser treatment following the required clinical assessment and guidance.
What if the treatment you ask for isn’t the treatment you need?
This is an important part of the eDerma MediSpa philosophy.
You don’t necessarily need to see Dr Nivana before every non-laser treatment. The therapists have worked within the practice and under her supervision for years and can assess the skin within their scope.
That means a therapist may advise that the treatment you initially had in mind isn’t the most appropriate option for your particular concern.
They may recommend another treatment, advise on appropriate skincare or, where something falls outside their scope, escalate the concern to Dr Nivana.
This is the difference between simply booking a procedure and developing a professionally guided skin treatment and care plan.
When should your skin concern go to a dermatologist?
Not everything should be approached as a cosmetic concern.
Dr Nivana’s practice remains the medical dermatology pathway within the wider ecosystem, focused on skin pathology, specialist diagnosis and medical management.
Where a concern requires diagnosis or specialist medical assessment, it belongs within the dermatology practice rather than simply being addressed with another product or cosmetic procedure.
Having these pathways connected means there is an opportunity to recognise when a person’s needs move beyond skincare or MediSpa treatment and require specialist input.
And that distinction is important.
Knowing when not to treat something cosmetically is also part of responsible skin care.
One skin journey. Different levels of care.
The objective isn’t for every person to move through every service.
It is to help each person access the level of care that is appropriate for their skin.
eDerma provides digital access to personalised skincare guidance and professionally curated products.
eDerma MediSpa provides personalised, results-focused skin treatments within a medically informed environment.
Dr Nivana’s practice provides specialist dermatological diagnosis and medical care when required.
Together, they create a more connected approach to skin care, one where the starting point isn’t a product, procedure or trend.
It’s you.
Not sure where your skin needs to go next?
You don’t need to know the answer before you begin.
If you’re unsure what products are appropriate for your skin, start with the free eDerma online skin assessment for professional guidance.
If you’re considering professional procedures, the eDerma MediSpa team can help determine an appropriate treatment approach based on your skin and goals.
And when a concern requires specialist medical attention, the dermatology pathway is there.
Because good skin care isn’t about doing more.
It’s about understanding what your skin needs and choosing the right next step.
Your skin. Your plan. Backed by medical expertise.
Start with your skin. Not the shelf.
